Professional cooperation on water
Seven leading Hungarian professional organizations have joined forces to establish a common professional position on the challenges facing water management in Hungary.

Professional cooperation on water

Pureco places great importance on professional collaboration, strong partnerships, and shared expertise. We believe that the complex challenges the water sector is facing can only be addressed through collective action, knowledge sharing, and long-term, sustainable solutions.

We therefore welcome the joint initiative of seven leading Hungarian professional organisations, which have established a set of common principles to support the sustainable future of water management in Hungary.

The joint declaration, entitled “Common minimum principles of professional organisations for the future of Hungarian water management,” was adopted on October 8, 2026. It aims to establish a shared professional foundation for addressing the challenges facing the water sector and to encourage constructive dialogue between industry stakeholders and decision-makers.

The initiative comes at a particularly important time. The growing impacts of climate change, the need for responsible water resource management, and the modernisation of existing infrastructure all call for coordinated action and closer professional cooperation.

Eight shared principles for sustainable water management

In line with the objectives outlined in Hungarian Government Resolution No. 1265/2026 (VIII. 25.), the declaration sets out eight fundamental principles to guide the long-term development of water management in Hungary.

These principles address key priorities such as protecting water resources, balancing water demand with available supplies, modernizing aging water infrastructure, promoting water retention and reuse, and strengthening cooperation between different water management systems.

The declaration also emphasises the importance of preserving the value of existing water utility infrastructure, establishing predictable long-term rehabilitation programs, and ensuring sustainable financing for water utility services.

In addition, the participating organisations highlight the need for reliable, data-driven decision-making, continuous scientific and technological development, and greater public awareness of the value of water. Encouraging responsible water use and strengthening water-conscious attitudes across society are essential steps toward long-term water security.

The joint declaration was signed by seven leading professional organisations:

  • Hungarian Hydrological Society
  • Water Management and Civil Engineering Division of the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers
  • Hungarian Water Utility Association (MaVíz)
  • Hungarian Water Association (HWA)
  • Global Water Partnership Hungary Foundation
  • National Association of Water Management Societies
  • Water Supply and Sewerage Subcommittee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences

We welcome this joint initiative by the seven professional organisations as an important step toward a more resilient and sustainable water sector in Hungary. By bringing together expertise, experience, and a common vision, such cooperation can provide a solid foundation for meaningful progress.

We believe that the future of water is a shared responsibility. The partnerships we build and the decisions we make today will shape water security for generations to come.
