AfWASA General Assembly Meeting in Togo

The General Assembly of the African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) held in Togo has taken the final decision to register Dr Károly Kovács PhD, President of HWP, on the AfWASA Strategic Council.
The African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) has been working for nearly 45 years, to solve the water challenges the continent faces.

Last year, the association changed its name from the African Water Association (AfWA) to the African Water and Sanitation Association. The expanding scope of activities and the growing challenges of the water and climate crisis require new organisational, strategic and decision-making structures.

To work more efficiently and effectively, it established a new Strategic Advisory Board and held its inaugural meeting.

Dr Károly Kovács PhD, President of the Hungarian Water Partnership and majority owner of Pureco, is the only non-African member of the newly appointed 25-member board. Dr. Károly Kovács's professional experience in several international organisations (European Water Association, ASEM Water) will be highly valued by AfWASA's senior management during the renewal of the organisation.

At the inaugural meeting following the integration, the Strategic Council, with the attendance of Dr Károly Kovács, reviewed the strategic plan of the organisation, identified the association's professional and communication focal points and confirmed the specialist groups (Development and management of skills; Water Quality; Non-Revenue Water; Drinking Water in rural and suburban areas; Sanitation; Financing water and Sanitation; Data and Innovations; Climate Change).

Dr Károly Kovács joined the specialist group on improving the financing of water-related investments and services (Financing water and sanitation).

The Deputy General Manager of Pureco Africa, Ghana, Ms Aseda Otabil, who also attended the Assembly, spoke at the technical meeting following her active participation in the Sanitation specialist group.

The general assembly meeting organised in the Togolese capital was a priority for us. The drinking water and wastewater treatment references of the Hungarian Water Partnership, Károly’s participation, his position at the most important platform of AfWASA and his prominent presence at the assembly made the Hungarian water knowledge, skills, experience and expertise truly visible internationally and, more importantly, across Africa.
